How High Can You Raise an Aquarium Planter? A Guide to Mossari Extensions.
By Nathan Trowbridge ยท Mossari
Do not exceed 5 inches (12.7 cm) of total added height across all extensions combined. Mossari specifies this limit for stability and reliable wicking. It applies to the whole stack, not to each individual piece. Raising the pot increases leverage at the aquarium rim and the distance water must travel.

Sometimes an aquarium planter needs a little more clearance: a leaf brushes the lid, the planting chamber sits too low, or a vine needs space to trail. Mossari Extension Modules let you make small height adjustments to a compatible aquarium planter. The key is choosing the smallest adjustment that solves the problem while preserving stability and water access.
Which extension should I choose?
The current selector offers curved, 2-inch, and 4-inch styles, in black or white. Match the component to your existing Mossari system and the clearance you actually need. Check the selected product option and setup guide before ordering; the shape and fit matter as well as the nominal height.
A 2-inch adjustment may be enough to clear nearby equipment. A 4-inch piece may suit a greater adjustment, but adding another 2-inch piece would exceed the total 5-inch limit. Avoid building a tall tower to place a plant closer to its light.
Will an extension make the plant grow better?
An extension changes position; it does not add light, nutrients, or growing space. Check where light reaches the leaves. An aquarium lamp aimed into the water may miss the foliage even after you raise it. Move the light or choose a suitable plant rather than relying on height alone.
How do I install and check the extension?
- Use the Mossari assembly guide for your planter and rimmed or rimless mounting arrangement.
- Fit the compatible snap-fit components securely. Account for the full added height before planting.
- Position the wick so it still reaches the aquarium water at your normal operating level.
- Check stability with the planted pot in position. Keep heavy foliage from pulling it sideways.
- Observe root-zone moisture after changing the height. Check again after a water change.
Why is my plant drier after raising the pot?
Start with the water connection. A wick that no longer reaches the reservoir cannot supply moisture. Also check wick placement, contact with the growing media, and whether the media was adequately moistened at setup. Reduce the added height if moisture delivery becomes unreliable.
Can I use extensions on every Mossari product?
Use them only with a compatible modular aquarium planter. They are not a universal riser for freestanding pots, caves, or propagators. The Small Aquarium Wicking Pot and Large Aquarium Wicking Pot list extension compatibility.
A modest adjustment can make a display feel more comfortable for both you and the plant. Choose your Mossari extension after checking fit, clearance, and the total height limit.
