How to Use LECA in Self-Watering Planters and Aquarium Plant Baskets
By Nathan Trowbridge · Mossari
LECA is lightweight expanded clay aggregate: clay pebbles that support roots and provide an open growing structure. It can be used in a suitable self-watering planter or to support roots in an aquarium plant basket. Mossari LECA Clay Pebbles contain no added fertilizer or organic amendments.

Is LECA the same as soil?
No. The pebbles support roots without the organic ingredients of a potting mix. Spaces between pellets help keep the structure open, but water and nutrient management still matter. LECA does not make a plant immune to root problems or turn ordinary water into a complete nutrient solution.
How do I prepare LECA before use?
Rinse the clay pellets outside the aquarium to remove loose dust. Follow the supplied preparation and planter guidance, and check moisture movement before relying on the wick. Never pour the dusty rinse water into a fish tank.
How do I move a houseplant from soil to LECA?
- Choose a small, healthy plant and a chamber that fits its roots.
- Gently remove loose potting mix outside the growing system. Avoid tearing healthy roots while trying to make every root spotless.
- Prepare the LECA and arrange the wick as the planter requires.
- Support the plant without burying its crown deeply or crushing roots.
- Monitor moisture and leaf condition while it establishes. Change one plant first rather than converting your whole collection at once.
A plant already developing roots in water can be a manageable starting point. A soil-grown root system may need time to adapt; some decline during transition is possible.
Do roots need to sit in the reservoir?
That depends on the product. In a wicking planter, the wick connects the water below to the LECA in the chamber above. In the In-Tank Aquarium Plant Basket, roots can extend directly into tank water. Follow that product’s arrangement rather than assuming every LECA setup uses the same water level.
Does LECA need fertilizer?
LECA contains no added nutrition. A freestanding houseplant setup needs a nutrient source appropriate for the plant and growing method. Aquarium water can supply some nutrients, but its composition varies. Do not put ordinary houseplant fertilizer into an aquarium containing animals.
How much does a 6-cup bag fill?
The product lists approximate coverage of one large aquarium or freestanding wicking pot, one Oasis planter, two small aquarium pots, two Soma planters, or four in-tank baskets. Root-ball size, pellet size, and settling affect the amount used. Check the current planter guidance before filling.
Why does my LECA look dry?
A dry-looking top layer does not necessarily mean every root is dry. Inspect the root-zone moisture and wick contact. If pellets near the roots remain dry, check that the wick reaches water and contacts the media. Avoid solving a failed wick connection by submerging the whole planting chamber.
Can I reuse clay pebbles?
LECA is a reusable medium, but used pellets need appropriate cleaning and assessment. Remove root debris and do not transfer material with suspected pests or disease into another plant or aquarium. Do not return pellets carrying household cleaner residues to a growing setup.
Explore Mossari LECA if you want a mineral growing medium and are comfortable checking moisture and nutrition during establishment.
