Can You Grow Pothos Fully Underwater?
By Nathan Trowbridge ยท Mossari
Pothos is a houseplant, not a fully submerged aquarium plant. You can root suitable pothos cuttings with roots in aquarium water while keeping leaves and growing shoots in the air. Do not treat a healthy-looking vine underwater as proof that it will thrive there long term.
Roots in water and leaves underwater are different setups
A planted aquarium may contain true aquatic plants that grow below the surface. A pothos display above the rim uses a different arrangement: the root system reaches water while the foliage grows in the room. The holder supports that boundary.
Water propagation is an established option for pothos and vining philodendrons, as described by Illinois Extension. That does not mean the leaves should be submerged or that every houseplant can grow this way indefinitely.
Where should the waterline be?
For a fresh stem cutting, identify a node on the vine. Position the rooting node in water and remove leaves that would sit below the surface. Keep the remaining leaves and the growing tip above it. Avoid placing a leaf stalk alone in the holder and expecting a new vine.
Once roots extend into the aquarium, support the plant so normal movement cannot pull its foliage into the water. Check the arrangement at both normal and lower tank water levels. A long vine may need separate support outside the tank as it grows.
What if a leaf has been underwater?
Bring the foliage back above the surface and inspect it. Remove tissue that is deteriorating rather than allowing it to decay in the aquarium. A single accidental dip is different from leaving leaves submerged for days, so judge the condition instead of assuming the whole cutting is lost.
If the stem is becoming soft, take the plant out for inspection. A holder cannot fix rotting tissue. Restarting with a healthy cutting may be simpler than trying to preserve a compromised stem.
Does an aquarium light provide enough light?
Only if useful light actually reaches the houseplant leaves. A lamp aimed downward can leave foliage above it in shade. Look at the plant from the side and check whether the upper leaves receive window light or a suitable overhead plant light.
Choose a holder for the stage of growth
A small propagator suits a small cutting. An established root system may need a basket and more room. The Mossari in-tank plant basket supports roots at the tank's edge; plan space for the plant's eventual growth without blocking filters or swim space.
The attractive part of this arrangement is the contrast: a living vine above the tank and visible roots below. Keeping that distinction clear helps both the display and routine maintenance.
